May 15th Gold nugget triathlon

The Alaska Women’s Gold Nugget Triathlon has taken place on the third Sunday of May every year for the last 27 years. The race began as a Girls Club event to encourage fitness and sports participation for girls. The youngest participant the first year was 6 and the oldest was 60. The race began at Dimond High School, but moved to Bartlett High School in 1988. This year’s event is scheduled for May 16, 2010 at Bartlett High School.  Our event is the largest triathlon in the state, and it is also the oldest women’s triathlon in the country. Over our 27 years, the race has grown from 166 participants in its first year to 1,417 registered entrants for the 2009 race. Registration for our event has filled up and closed within 24 hours at a cap of 1400 participants for the last two years. This year we will be registering 1500 participants, and do anticipate again filling up in less than 24 hours!!
